Hysterosalpingography

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an examination of the uterus and fallopian tubes in which a contrast medium is administered into the uterine cavity through a hysterosalpingography catheter and serial X-rays are taken. HSG allows the doctor to assess the shape of the uterine cavity, the condition of the uterine mucosa, the patency of the fallopian tubes and their shape, as well as assess the condition of the appendages. HSG is a method often used in the diagnosis of infertility.

Catheter for HSG test

The HSG test usually takes several minutes and is usually performed up to the 10th day of the menstrual cycle, but after the bleeding stops. A certain variant of HSG is sonosalpingography (SIS), in which through the same HSG catheter, instead of iodine contrast agent, a saline solution mixed with air is administered, and the obtained images are evaluated in ultrasonography.
