Spinal anesthesia

Spinal anesthesia is one of the types of regional anesthesia (central block). In spinal anesthesia, the anesthetic mixes with the cerebrospinal fluid and causes a blockade of the nerves: sensory (no feeling of pain, touch, and temperature), motor (inability to move), and sympathetic (vasodilation, drop in blood pressure). The anesthesiologist continuously monitors the patient's vital signs. Spinal anesthesia has the advantage of rapid onset and short duration of action.

When an spinal anesthesia is used

Spinal anesthesia is most often used during procedures within the lower limbs and genitourinary system as well as during orthopedic and vascular procedures. As previously mentioned, spinal anesthesia drugs are injected into the cerebrospinal fluid located in the subarachnoid space. The safest place for their administration is the lumbar spine (lumbar puncture between the 3rd and 4th or 4th and 5th vertebrae) because the risk of spinal cord injury is negligible.
