Distal protection

Stents widen the lumen of the affected artery and maintain its patency, i.e., they act as a scaffold. An essential element of the CAS procedure is the advancement, distally to the treated stenosis, a special distal protection system (neuroprotection), which captures the fragments of atherosclerotic plaque released during angioplasty (embolic material). The use of protection during stenting reduces the risk of stroke/TIA and allows the removal of the embolic material at the end of the procedure.
