Epidural anesthesia

Epidural anesthesia is one type of regional anesthesia (central block). The epidural anesthesia kit usually includes a special needle (Tuohy needle) and an epidural catheter. During epidural anesthesia, the drug is injected into the space between the periosteum and the dura of the spinal cord. The drug is administered through a thin 1 mm diameter catheter and then spreads up and down, blocking the adjacent spinal nerves.

When an epidural anesthesia is used

Unlike spinal anesthesia, an epidural can be performed anywhere in the spine. However, a lumbar puncture is most performed. The anesthetic effect lasts shorter than in the case of spinal anesthesia. However, a catheter is often inserted, which allows for continuous injection of the anesthetic, extending the anesthesia duration. Epidural anesthesia is most used for pelvic and lower limb surgeries, gynecological procedures, and childbirth.
